Genesis of the Hospital Bukumbi hospital is a non-profit organization owned by Catholic Archdiocese of Mwanza. This is one of the oldest hospitals in this region dating back to early 1900’s. It was initially established as dispensary by missionaries “white fathers” . The existing hospital buildings were built early 1950’s. The hospital is located about 30 km from Mwanza city, north eastern part of Misungwi district, two kilometer along Lake Victoria shore. The hospital is registered by ministry of health and social welfare (MOHSW). It has bed capacity of 150 beds serving an average of 25,000 to 30,000 patients annually. These patients of different ethnic backgrounds, different areas inside and outside Mwanza region. The hospital caters for medical, surgical, obstetric and gynaecology, paediatric, OPD,RCH emergency. Other services include laboratory, pharmacy, imaging, radiology, outreach and others. The facility finances its own operations through fees charged for the service provided and little fund from MOHSW. The charges are the modest and are reviewed regularly in response to the needs of the poor. This helps us to sustain the hospital by paying staff, replacement of equipment. The hospital has started to provide specialized services to some area of medicine in collaboration with BMC- consultant hospital, gynecologist, urologists and general surgeons come regularly and attend patients. The Hospital is registered by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in1997 (Registration Number 197001). To work towards fullness of life, so that every person is assured of basic health and may enjoy respect, dignity and equality as human beings. To ensure the availability of promotive, preventive, and curative health care at affordable cost and to advocate indigenous medicine. To reach out more efficiently to the marginalized.
